In the series The Art of Writing Hester van Hasselt and Bianca Sistermans attempt to grasp the magical process of writing. It is a long-term autonomous project, motivated by their shared fascination with the creative process.
After a period spent reading the oeuvre of the writer, Sistermans and Van Hasselt draw up a joint plan and select an angle or approach. They then work independently of each other, with the writer being interviewed and portrayed in two separate sessions. The texts are characterised by openness. The portraits show the writer in his or her work, living or thinking space. The resulting material is combined in close collaboration, during which thoughts and points of view are exchanged many times. This leads to portraits in which text and image enhance each other and often produce in-depth insights.
The series The Art of Writing comprises portraits of such writers as K. Schippers, Maarten van der Graaff, Antjie Krog, Mustafa Stitou, Marcel Möring and Remco Campert, and thematic triptychs such as The ultimate form of reading – on the translation of poetry, How you stumble over a hippopotamus – on writing poetry for children, and Language as a constant – on how three young poets perceive the world and transmute it into poetry.
